| I always say that Poetry is out there.... Desperate Women Astronauts Prefer Poets to Poolboys Tuesday, January 24, 2006 (adapted) | ||
Utah, USA (XTVWorld.Com) -- Four women engineers on duty in a simulated mission to Mars in a Utah
desert canyon ("Crew 41") hosted the first poetry slam on the red
planet during the January 1 - 14 shift.
The
mission journal,
with photos, depicts the crew having enough fun
to immunize entire neighborhoods from Desperate Housewives. Among the poetry read aloud by the lonely explorers was "Human Tears In Zero G," by Vanna
Bonta,
a writer and cameo actress known for her stirring talent for language.
Bonta follows Mars Society reports and felt honored to be selected for the Martian fest. The Crew 41 women were exhilarating and funny, Bonta said, and confessed she has never watched Desperate Housewives, explaining "Mediocrity is so painful and contagious."

The barren lands of southern Utah look remarkably like Mars. A Mars Desert Research Station is conducting extended simulations of Mars exploration with a live web cam, and teams of volunteers explore the surrounding terrain, detailing their EVAs (extra-vehicular activity), biological and geological analysis.
